The upcoming lunar eclipse will occur on March 25th, 2024 and this is a Lunar eclipse in Libra, following on from the solar eclipse on October 14th, 2023, which was a new moon in Libra. This particular lunar eclipse will be known as ‘penumbral’. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Moon moves through the Earth's penumbral shadow, causing a subtle shading on the lunar surface. In Australia, we will be able to see this eclipse from 7pm (AEDT) on Monday 25th March 2024, when 95.57% of the moon will be immersed in the Earth’s penumbral shadow. The eclipse will have a duration of 1 hour and 32 minutes.
People may notice changes during the lunar eclipse, which can catalyse the formation of new patterns in your life. One significant shift you may note during the lunar eclipse is that of transformation and renewal. The shadow cast on the Moon during an eclipse is seen as a symbolic representation of darkness or challenges that can be overcome, leading to personal growth and positive change.
Additionally, we may notice energetic shifts. These events often influence emotions, consciousness, and spiritual awareness, providing an opportunity for introspection and personal development. Lunar eclipses can provide the perfect time to release old habits or emotions and let them go entirely. You may use this event as a time to cleanse elements of your life that no longer serve a purpose, or to reflect on past experiences, release negativity, and make space for new beginnings. Changes we experience may be abrupt or intense and this is important to remember: although these changes can teach us important life lessons, we also must be aware that everything is heightened during an eclipse.
Reflecting on and vocalising your goals and ambitions is a great way to utilise the lunar eclipse in a positive and productive way. This is a powerful moment to set intentions, perform rituals, or engage in spiritual practices. The heightened energy during these celestial events is believed to amplify the effectiveness of such activities.
The lunar eclipse is also a significant opportunity to connect with our feminine energies. The moon is often associated with feminine energies and so the celestial event of a lunar eclipse can be used as a particularly significant time for connecting with feminine aspects, intuition, and emotional well-being.
People belonging to the astrological signs of Libra, Cancer, Aries and Capricorn will feel the event of the March 25th eclipse more powerfully, all of which are known as the cardinal signs. Cardinal signs mark the beginning of each season in the astrological calendar (Aries for spring, Cancer for summer, Libra for fall, and Capricorn for winter). People born under cardinal signs are thought to be initiators, catalysts for change, and leaders who like to take charge of situations.
For eclipse season, you may want to use certain crystals in order to manifest certain energies relating to the eclipse, or to guide any changes being brought about in your life. There are a range of general crystals that you can use during these periods, as well as specific, more intentional crystals which may help you navigate certain situations.
One great crystal to use or to wear in jewellery during eclipse season is Clear Quartz. This crystal is very versatile, so using it during a lunar eclipse is a practice rooted in various spiritual and metaphysical beliefs. Clear Quartz is often associated with clarity, amplification, and the ability to enhance energy, making it a perfect choice to use during a lunar eclipse. It is also associated with all chakras and is believed to help balance and align them. During a lunar eclipse, individuals may use Clear Quartz to facilitate chakra alignment, meditation, or energy work, aiming to attune themselves to the celestial energies. The uncertainty which is often brought by eclipses means that Clear Quartz is a popular choice of crystal used to gain clarity on specific issues, make important decisions, or receive intuitive guidance.
Selenite is another clear crystal option to use during a lunar eclipse, due to its associations with the moon, making it a popular choice for those seeking to connect with lunar energies. The origins of the name of this crystal are from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon and it is believed to have a high vibrational frequency that can dispel negative energies. Selenite is known for its purifying and calming energies and is commonly used for cleansing and charging other crystals. Wearing a gemstone like Selenite in your jewellery during a lunar eclipse will ensure you are physically close to it, which will help you make the most of its properties.
Additionally, Moonstone is a crystal which is intrinsically linked with the energies of the moon, as suggested by its name. Use of Moonstone during the lunar eclipse may be seen as a way to amplify and attune oneself to the heightened celestial energies associated with the event. This is considered a powerful time for spiritual insights and using Moonstone may be thought to enhance one's intuitive abilities and connect with inner wisdom.
There are other crystals which are popular to use during events like the Lunar eclipse, which have more of an intentional function. Amethyst, for instance, is used for remaining calm and emotionally controlled during intense periods like the eclipse. Amethyst is often associated with spiritual growth, inner peace, and higher consciousness. During a lunar eclipse, which is considered a powerful and spiritually charged event, individuals may use Amethyst to enhance their connection to spiritual energies and promote a sense of tranquility. Amethyst is also known to promote lucid dreaming and dream recall. If this is an unwanted effect, Amethyst is better to be used during daytime hours, as its functions may be intensified during celestial events such as the Lunar eclipse.
Rose Quartz is a crystal that can be used intentionally, especially with regard to love and relationships. If you are looking to manifest certain romantic emotions in yourself or in others, the Lunar eclipse can be an ideal time to focus on this. Since emotions will be particularly heightened during this time, this can be an ideal opportunity to use this stone to guide your relationships or focus on intentions related to love, compassion, and heart-centered qualities. Lunar eclipses are often seen as powerful moments for setting intentions. Whether you choose to use Rose Quartz through meditation or by wearing a piece of jewellery containing a beautiful Rose Quartz gemstone, you will be able to connect with the crystal and use it for manifestation purposes. If being used intentionally, consider opting for a Rose Quartz pendant, which will allow a close proximity of the gemstone to your heart.
To protect against negative energies and electromagnetic fields during the Lunar eclipse, Black Tourmaline can be used. During a Lunar Eclipse, individuals may use Black Tourmaline to create a protective shield, ground themselves and shield against any potentially intense or disruptive energies. Black Tourmaline is believed to have the ability to transmute or transform negative energies into positive ones. Use of this gemstone is therefore ideal for cleansing and purifying your energy field, which will help you retain a sense of clarity. Having Black Tourmaline in close proximity to you will help you achieve this barrier of protection, hence why it is a popular choice in jewellery, which will be next to the body.
Certain rituals can be carried out during the eclipse period and the heightened energy and symbolic significance can provide an opportune time to do so. Meditation, cleansing and charging crystals and carrying out rituals are all examples of things you can do to celebrate and utilise the lunar eclipse. Meditating with the crystal of your choice in the palm of your hand is a way to manifest your intentions and verbally speaking these out loud before or during your meditation is a clear way to reinforce your desires.
An example of a ritual that you may choose to carry out during the Lunar Eclipse is making moon water. This can simply be done by filling a bowl or jar with water and placing it under the moonlight on the night of the full moon. This can be used to drink, as part of your beauty routine, or to spray, in order to cleanse and revitalise your energy. Making crystal grids is an additional way that you may choose to enhance healing properties and these are deemed most effective when placed in geometric patterns.
On the evening of the Lunar Eclipse, many people take the opportunity to cleanse and charge their crystals. There are many things to consider when charging crystals. Firstly, you need to select the crystals that you want to be charged with a specific energy, or that align with your goals. They can then be put out under the moonlight and you can set intentions for them.
Being aware of the Lunar Eclipse is important in understanding your own energies. Heightened emotions are likely, but this may allow you to manifest desires more powerfully and set out your specific goals and resolutions.
]]>Amidst these enchanting qualities, there is one optical phenomenon that shines with particular brilliance—Asterism.
Asterism reveals itself as a star-shaped pattern observed in some crystals and minerals. From a single point, six radiant rays or lines extend outward, creating a celestial spectacle reminiscent of a tiny galaxy encapsulated within the stone. This phenomenon adds an extra touch of magic, inviting us to delve into a world where light and minerals intertwine in a cosmic dance.
Asterism is caused by the presence of microscopic needle-like inclusions within the crystal structure of the mineral. These inclusions can be composed of various minerals, such as rutile or hematite, and are oriented in specific directions within the crystal. When light enters the gemstone and interacts with these inclusions, it is reflected and scattered, creating the star-like pattern.
The most common gemstone known for displaying asterism is star sapphire, which is a variety of the mineral corundum. When properly cut and polished, a star sapphire exhibits this special optical spectacle. Other gemstones that can display asterism include star ruby, garnet, diopside, rose quartz and spinel.
Gemstones exhibiting asterism are highly valued and sought after by collectors and enthusiasts due to their unique and striking appearance. The intensity and visibility of the asterism can vary, depending on the quality of the gemstone and the lighting conditions under which it is viewed.
Asterism, as an optical phenomenon observed in gemstones, does not have specific lore associated with it. However, gemstones themselves have often been steeped in lore and believed to possess various metaphysical properties.
For example, star sapphires and star rubies, which exhibit asterism, have been associated with mystical and protective qualities in some cultures. In ancient times, it was believed that these stones contained the essence of the stars and could bring good fortune, guidance, and spiritual insight to their wearers. They were thought to enhance intuition, provide protection from negative energies, and symbolise hope and divine connection.
In Indian mythology, star sapphires were linked to the celestial deity Saturn (Shani). It was believed that wearing a star sapphire could appease Saturn and bring blessings, prosperity, and protection from malevolent influences.
In Metaphysical circles Asterism is associated with the following beliefs:
We find ourselves captivated by the beauty and intrigue that gemstones adorned with the celestial phenomenon of Asterism possess, and we hope that you, dear reader, have also been swept away by their enchantment. As we reflect on this awe-inspiring phenomenon, we are reminded of our shared cosmic unity with nature. We are all made of stars, and Asterism serves as a gentle reminder of this profound connection. In closing as we bid farewell, let us carry the enchantment and appreciation for these remarkable gemstones, which never cease to inspire wonder and amazement, while nurturing our understanding of the eternal bond between Earth and the stars above.
It's important to note that these metaphysical beliefs and lore are based on spiritual and cultural traditions and should be seen as subjective interpretations rather than scientifically proven facts. The meanings and effects attributed to crystals can vary between different belief systems and individuals.
]]>Now bring your thoughts back down to earth and ponder this. Crystals can take thousands to millions of years to form, which means they have been present during key moments in our planet’s evolution- the ice age, dinosaurs, ancient civilisations etc. Some objects on earth didn’t originate here at all- monstrous molten metal meteors have collided with our land, destroying everything in their path leaving behind a massive crater, altering the climate and reshaping the landscape completely. Then we have tektites, the perfect bridge between earth forming minerals and extra terrestrial materials, humble ruminants of meteoric violence.
We have been lucky enough to acquire some of these rare cosmic minerals and skilfully transformed them into exquisite, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces. Now, you can adorn yourself with the enigmatic essence of the universe, and wear a tangible connection to the cosmos.
"Each stone is the result of a unique journey of height, distance and speed."
Tektites are generally translucent to opaque black, brown, grey, yellow and occasionally green in colour. Their chemical compositions are similar to both granite and impure sandstone (greywacke) or soils of these compositions, being high in silica (68-82%) with 10-14% aluminium oxide and lesser iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and titanium. A homogenous glass, the name tektite comes from the Greek work ‘tektos’, meaning ‘molten’. This hard, lightweight material has been found in artifacts across the world, jewellery items, totem stones and fashioned into jewellery world / august 2015 arrowheads and small blades by fracturing the surface into curved shapes with a fine edge.
Although small and unassuming, part of a tektite’s mystique is the unknown. The age of formation and constant surface morphology of our planet can make it hard to identify exactly how they got here and when it all took place. The most popular theory on the ‘how’ suggests an extremely massive meteoric impact, splashing the melted ground rock up into the atmosphere before raining back down onto earth. As for ‘when’, there are four major geographically extended deposit sites (strewn fields) where tektites have been discovered, three of which correspond to known source craters: The 11km diameter Bosumtwi Crater in Ghana is linked to the Ivory Coast tektites, the 24km diameter Ries Crater in Germany is the source of the Central European tektites and the 85km diameter Chesapeake Bay impact structure in North America is the source crater of the North American tektites. The Australasian strewn field is left with the absence of a source crater, although it may be covered by dense forest or may not be a typical rounded crater due to a low-angle impact.
Moldavite is one of the better-known tektites, loved for its rich olive green to dull green colour and delicate feathered external texture. Found in Moldau, Czechoslovakia this tektite corresponds to the Ries Crater in Germany where the impact is believed to have been some 15 million years ago. Worshipped for thousands of years for its high-energy vibration and gem-like qualities, it is a beautiful tektite for jewellery.
The majority of Moldavite, remnants of celestial impacts during the middle to Upper Miocene era, lies concealed within Earth's depths, accessible only in select regions near crater sites. The extraction process involves meticulous efforts and extensive measures, contributing to its steep cost. Typically discovered as droplet-shaped particles merely a few centimeters in diameter, Moldavite in its raw form is diminutive, requiring delicate refinement and cutting to transform it into wearable gemstones. Large specimens are exceedingly scarce due to these challenges, amplifying the value of even seemingly modest fragments.
Regrettably, Moldavite's limited supply, coupled with its irreplaceable nature, has propelled its market price to soaring heights, driven further by the demand from those seeking its spiritual healing properties. Consequently, this scarcity has led to the proliferation of counterfeit pieces as unscrupulous individuals strive to replicate the stone's natural allure with deceptive imitations. Bunny Bed, owner and owner of Made In Earth, has felt the brunt of these low cost imposters.
“Large, good quality Moldavite is difficult to find at the best of times and now the market is flooded with imitations. They are sold at very cheap prices and look scarily similar to the real deal. As they have a raw external surface it is hard to examine and test so you really need to know and trust your source. I’ve dealt directly with locals in the Czech Republic for years and prices are going up, not down.”
Some 28 million years ago a gigantic extraterrestrial body collided with earth two such materials that so closely resemble at great velocity and landed in the desert in Libya. The heat from the impact melted the sandstone onto which it fell and so the Libyan Desert Glass was created… or so the story goes. Libyan Desert Glass has generated intense interest in scientific communities due to the uncertainty surrounding its origins and has sparked many evolving theories.
Located in the great sand sea on the Egyptian Libyan border, the strewn field spans 128 km north to south and 48 km east to west, in terrain so inaccessible and inhospitable it’s remarkable to have been discovered at all. The mysterious, vitreous substance overlies bedrock of the Nubian Sandstone deposited during the early Cretaceous epoch some 100 million years ago. Known as the stone for leadership and task completion the glass was used for tools by Pleistocene man (11 thousand to 2 million years ago) and may have been discovered in modern times as early as 1846. However it wasn’t until 1934 that modern science had a closer look and the scientific debate on the mystery of its creation began to unfold.
As for the application of this mysterious glass in jewellery, it has in fact been used for centuries. The centrepiece of one of Tutankhamen’s necklaces us a scarab beetle carved out of the lustrous yellow-green glass.
Its origins may continue to intrigue mankind for decades, wether or not its creation was a direct result of an extraterrestrial body colliding with earth. This truely remarkable material has been utilised throughout history and continues to be admired for its beauty and mysterious beginnings.
Meteorites are among some of the oldest and most rare minerals on our earth and have been falling from the sky for eons. Believed to have begun their life as part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, meteorites are a natural material that has been knocked out of orbit by colliding with other objects. These pieces of celestial debris plummet towards earth at tremendous speeds reaching up to 28,000 kilometres per hour, transforming into an intense burning meteor, or shooting star, for a short moment in time before colliding with the earth.
An important iron meteorite to note is the Gibeon Meteorite from a large region of what is now present day Namibia, Africa. Although it was used by the Nama people of Gibeon for spear points and tools for thousands of years it was first officially reported in 1838 by Captain J.E Alexander who collected samples for analysis which led to the discovery of it’s extraterrestrial nature. By studying the external characteristics and spread of its strewn-field (120 km wide and 390 km long) it is suggested that the Gibeon meteorite was a single large meteorite that burst high in the atmosphere catapulting fragments in all directions.
With chemical constituents of 90% iron 8% nickel. 0.4% cobalt, and 0.04% phosphorus, kamecite, and taenite are the two component iron-nickel alloys that exist within the meteorite’s composition and by studying them the structural classes can be determined. One intriguing phenomena of iron meteorites is an amazing internal structure formed by these two alloys, first described by Count Alois Von Beckh Widmanstätten in the 19th century, as a complex interlocking crystalline pattern and aptly named the Widmanstätten Pattern. Crystallising in an octahedral form the two alloys form a cross-hatching of triangular shapes, which vary depending on the direction the meteorite is cut. In order to reveal this remarkable metallic grid the iron meteorite must be cut into a slab, polished, and etched in a nitric acid solution.
Unique to meteorites, the Widmanstätten pattern is formed by the extremely slow cooling of the molten metal alloys at a rate of approximately 1 degree per thousand years. The presence of these patterns is evidence that the heavy iron material os of extraterrestrial origin, as these conditions cannot be replicated in a laboratory. The Gibeon Meteorite is the perfect example of a fine octahedrite Widmanstätten pattern and although estimated to have collided with the earth’s crust some thirty thousand years ago radiometric dating places the age of crystallisation of the iron-nickel metal at 4 billion years!
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away in the still frosty morning light, the sky came to life with fireballs as bright as the sun. At 10:38am on February 1947 it rained a shower of meteors over the thick forrest of the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in Eastern Russia. In the 5 seconds of rapid trajectory the meteorite traveled over 600 kilometre, exploding mid-flight into fragments, finally impacting the earth in a series of explosive bangs followed by a thunderous roar that roared over the hills echoing throughout villages. The enormous meteorite left behind a dusty trail of smoke and meteoroid particles that could be seen in the sky until sunset.
The Sikhote-Alin Meteorite is the largest observed meteorite to have fallen in modern history. It is estimated that over 23,000kg fell that morning leaving behind 120 craters, the largest measuring 6 x 26 meters, with debris covering an elliptical area of 1.62 kilometres. The pre-atmospheric size of meteorite body was suggested to weigh over 100 tonnes and more than 70 tonnes estimated to have reach the earth’s surface. From this, 8,500 specimens have been collected, the largest weighing in at 1,745kg!
Known as the ‘stone of endurance’ iron meteorites are amongst the densest materials on earth and were once part of the hot core of a long vanished planet. With an iron content over 90% these meteorites are much heavier than any earth rocks.
The universe has always intrigued mankind; its infinite size is more than most of us can comprehend. Occasionally a small fragment of this enormous celestial world zooms into our atmosphere challenging what we know is possible and providing things of beauty truely out of this world.

We all know that our precious stones and crystals have an interesting geological make up, and fascinating mythology, but is there anything to the shapes and cuts crafted into jewellery? Here is something else to consider when looking for your next unique piece from Made In Earth 💎
Geodes and Clusters are natural rocks with crystal-lined cavities forming from a single base, they are completely unique, occasionally occurring with multiple mineral formations. The term "Geode" comes from the Greek word "Geodes" meaning "Earth-like."
In metaphysical beliefs, geodes are believed to possess great power due to their multiple points, aiding in intuition and communication with divine beings. They are also associated with elevating moods and balancing energies.
Obelisks are considered significant and powerful shapes in the ancient world, with Scholars believing that they represented eternity, immortality, and served as a connection between the heavens and the earth. The tip of an obelisk was believed to attract cosmic energy which is then released through the base.
In crystal healing practices, points within obelisks are thought to possess medicinal properties, increasing vitality and focusing energy on to alleviate pain in specific areas.
A shape that is both classic and enduring, the teardrop is said to represent ‘tears of joy’ so it’s no wonder that they're a popular choice for engagement ring setting.
In holistic healing practices, teardrop gems are considered the yin and yang of shapes, bringing both male and female energies into balance. The style of cut itself has been long associated with people of elegance, are bold of heart, and nonconforming.
Double-terminated crystals are unique crystals that have points at both ends. Unlike geodes and clusters which grow from a matrix, double-terminated crystals grow from a central "seed," resulting in two points in opposite directions.
It is believed that these crystals can flow energy in both directions, with one point drawing in negativity and the other expelling positivity. As a result, they are considered powerful tools for spiritual practices and can offer protection like an energy shield when worn. Double-terminated crystals are seen as valuable allies for energy work and spiritual grounding purposes. Overall, these crystals are known for their dual directional energy flow and protective properties.
Freeform Crystals and Gems are precious stones that are not cut or polished into a specific shape, and are left in their natural state. They are believed to maintain their full healing properties due to their lack of shape or form. These unique and organic statement pieces are appreciated by those who value the natural world.
They can be used in various ways such as meditation, resetting, recharging, cleansing, and manifestation of personal intentions and desires.
*The belief in Crystal Metaphysical 'properties' is derived from their use in culture throughout history. The first and easiest way to gain an understanding of your gemstone is to trust your intuition in the way in which you perceive colours and materials. To do this, close your eyes and imagine what colours bring you happiness, calmness and other emotions you would like to feel on a regular basis. If a particular colour sticks out, this is a good sign. With that, take your colour and take a look at some gemstones that house this tone. From here, do a simple analysis of the stones, paying particular attention to shape, feel, opacity and refraction. Your mind will slowly start to gravitate towards your preferred piece.
Next, you should take the stone that appeals to you the most and begin doing some research on the meaning behind it and its metaphysical aura. Most importantly you may want to consider whether the stones properties align with you, are its benefits ones you need? If you're torn between a few gemstones, this can be a deciding factor. It may also be worth your while to consider what your birthstone is, as often these resonate well with people and hold significance.

Why Use Gemstones in Interior Design?
Those who are interested in interior design will be familiar with the idea that the three main principles to balance when it comes to decor is mood, personality, & functionality.
Applying this to gemstone specimens is no different. While physical functionality is not as important here, the idea of presence, mood, and personality is functional in itself.
As gemstone metaphysical properties are a popular and growing culture, it has seen the addition of gemstone displays in the home, public space, and work space. Not only is it possible to find a gemstone to suit the tonal colour of your space and radiate vibrance in a vicinity, but more often, these specimens are chosen to reinforce various positive energies and auras. Below we have given a brief on some of our favourite crystal specimens for transforming a space, including supposed metaphysical benefits, colour schemes, and ambience.
Our Recommendations
*Given the delicate nature of our large gemstone specimens, we do not have them listed on our site for delivery; they are currently exclusive to our Galleries and in-store purchases. If visiting us isn't feasible for you, please contact our gallery and we will see what we can do!*

With Gemstone jewellery, the beauty does not only lie in the geological history of the piece. With the constant emergence of metaphysical meaning throughout gemstone culture, we thought it only right to acknowledge this positive, growing influence.
Palo Santo is a Holy wood from the Palo Santo tree on the coast of South America. We use this wood as an incense, burning it to create a gentle smoke that releases medicinal, spiritual and therapeutic healing properties for both you and your crystals. Simply, burn the wood for 30 seconds, letting it extinguish itself. Carry the stick around your environment with a specific intention in mind, and let the swirls of earthy, citrus musk dance around you.
All in all, there is no definitive research that has proven cleansing to work on crystals. But as all things on Earth accumulate knowledge, there is never any harm in giving it a go for good measure!

Believe it or not, Amber is not actually classified as a true Gemstone. Amber is the product of fossilised tree resin that can be between 30-90million years old.
While Amber can be harvested worldwide, it is most closely associated with the Dominican Republic, Myanmar, and Europes Baltic Regions i.e., Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Classifications
Formation
While not a traditional gemstone, Amber is categorised as an organic gemstone given its natural occurrence. Different from regular tree sap, Amber resin is specifically sourced from ancient evergreen trees (Pinus Succinifera), where the resin is fossilised over millions of years. This explains how insects may become trapped and too fossilised, as the resin is thick and sticky.
Metaphysical meaning & properties
Ancient culture dictates Amber as the 'soul of the tiger' as well as being known as the stone of courage.
Amber is said to promote healing by absorbing and transforming negative energy into positive energy. Amber is a brilliant and bright relaxing energy that aids with manifestation. Also known as the purifying stone. Amber is said to cleanse the mind, body, and soul.
Amber is one of our favourite stones here at Made In Earth, its stunning rich colour is complimentary to all styles and complexion, displaying elegance and natural beauty through its natural formation. Carrying amber on your person as a piece of jewellery is a beautiful way to recognise the intricacies of organic formation and displays character not readily unique to other stones!

While the Gemstone is often the highlight element to your jewellery, the chain or band on which it sits is essential in complimenting the overall look. Here at Made In Earth we have a beautiful range of 925 sterling silver and Vermeil settings of different styles and sizes and just like our gemstone guide, we have outlined the best way to maintain your beautiful pieces.
Delicate Silver
Silver is a soft metal and not indestructible. Like most precious metals used for jewellery, silver van scratch and bend if not treated with care. Delicate designs need to be treated with care to ensure the silver does not bend, warp or break. Our fine wire necklaces, bands and bracelets are hand wrapped and not constructed like traditional settings. This includes clasps and findings, which can stretch and open if too much weight or pressure is applied.
As is for all our jewellery, it is best to avoid contact with any moisture, be it steam, water, cleaning chemicals, make up, or perfumes. With the range of chemicals in these products, like bleach; they can damage the silver of your piece and the results may be permanent and irreversible. When showering, we recommend removing your jewellery and placing its on a soft cloth outside of the bathroom so to avoid moisture exposure.
Your silver cleaning cloth, provided with your jewellery purchase, is made from 100 cotton and impregnated with cleaning & anti-tarnish agent.
14k Gold Vermeil Finish
Should you purchase from our Made Gold collection, you will be purchasing a stunning 925 Sterling Silver chain, coated in 14k Gold. We highly recommend to adhere to the following guidance to maintain your Vermeil pieces post-purchase.
Over time the silver underneath the vermeil my begin to tarnish and a blotchy appearance might become visible. To remove this, we recommend dabbing the spot gently with Windex, using a cotton ball rather than a polishing cloth, as a cloth may be too abrasive against the Vermeil surface.
If silver begins to show through, your jewellery may need to go through the Vermeil plating process again. Simply bring your jewellery in to us and get a quote from our gallery team!
As always, avoid contact with any moisture, be it steam, water, cleaning chemicals, make up, perfumes or any other household products. It is recommended not to wear your jewellery in the shower and keep it away from possible bathroom condensation or moisture.
]]>While general jewellery care is something many may be familiar with, we at Made In Earth are insistent that our handcrafted, gemstone jewellery receives extra attention to detail when it comes to the aftercare and preservation of your beautiful pieces.
Luckily, we have outlined the best way for you to look after your jewellery in this detailed and educational blog...Check out the do's and don'ts of Jewellery care!
Moisture & chemicals
For all jewellery, it is best to avoid contact with any moisture, be it steam, water, cleaning chemicals, make up, or perfumes. With the range of chemicals in these products, like bleach; they can damage the silver of your piece and the results may be permanent and irreversible. When showering, we recommend removing your jewellery and placing its on a soft cloth outside of the bathroom so to avoid moisture exposure.
Polishing & tarnish build-up
For 925 Sterling Silver, a soft polishing cloth is the best way to remove surface build-up on your jewellery. And when not being worn, your jewellery should be kept in a safe, dry environment such as a jewellery box or pouch. When purchasing from us, we include a special cloth for your jewellery with every order. Made fro 100% cotton and impregnated with cleaner agent/anti-tarnish, they are they best way to polish and maintain your gemstone jewellery. This cloth remains effective so long as it is not washed. Follow these steps for many years of wearing pleasure!
Property specific maintenance (soft, fossil, water or iron rich, etc)
+ Raw, Druzy & Soft Stones - These particular stones are in their natural state and are not polished. With an often crystalline texture or low level of hardness, they can be prone to scratching/chipping so extra care must be taken when being worn. Their rough nature can also lead to a greater dust build-up so polishing the jewellery with your MIE provided cloth will aid in keeping it clean.
+ Metallic/sub-metallic or Iron rich - Gems such as pyrite & meteorite are an example of metallic/sub-metallic stones, meaning they contain high amounts of iron. As such, they can be prone to rusting or discolouration if not cared for properly, so please take extra caution! All meteorite stones at our Gallery have been protected with a special barrier coating to aid in their maintenance, but to ensure this coating remains on the gems, it is still important to avoid contact with moisture!
+ High water % stones - Stones such as Opal with a water composition of 2-20% are best stored in a sealed plastic or jewellery pouch with a damp cotton ball so to prevent dehydration of the stone. The reason for this is; while these types of stones are generally stable, heat or sudden temperature changes can cause fracture lines known as 'crazing' as well as some colour loss. Stones with such water content are best cleaned using a damp cloth, but be sure never to soak the stone!
+ Fossils - While all our stones deserve attention to care, it is no surprise that fossils, given their unique and fragile formation process over millions of years, require a delicate touch. Comprised of many various minerals, fossils are delicate and often porous with varying hardness depending on their mineral composition. Extra care must be taken during wear to avoid scratching and chipping, and when cleaning; we recommend a dry polishing (avoiding moisture) of your 100% cotton cloth, so to maintain the beauty of the piece.
]]>The culture of Crystal & Gemstone Metaphysical Properties is one that has been around for thousands of years. Throughout history, individual crystals have been associated with specific properties that are said to aid in the spiritual wellness of those who possess it.
Origins
The origins of crystal metaphysical healing have been linked with famous historic entities and civilisations such as Plato, the Sumerians, The Ancient Egyptians, and The Ancient Greeks. The most common crystal attributes shared among these cultures was the power of healing, protection, love and rebirth, which still hold true in contemporary Gemology.
Did you know?: The word crystal is actually derived from the Greek phrase Krystallos, meaning ice.
Healing Properties
Medicinally, crystal healing is the belief that gems allow healing energy to enter the body and in turn, expel negative and disease causing energy. Also popular in health spas, crystals are said to aid in relaxation and the removal of physical & mental stress/fatigue in ones body.
Choosing your Crystal
While the properties of all crystals are a positive aura suited to everyone, often people feel a connection with a specific crystal based on their natural beauty, colour, and the intricacies of that particular gem. To help find your Crystal check out our stone stories archive!

]]>Vermeil is a luxurious finish that can be applied to silver jewellery to make them appear gold. This definition can often be confused with gold-plated finishes. However, its differences can determine the quality, longevity, and reactivity of your jewellery...
Jewellery can only be considered vermeil if the underlying metal is strictly 925 sterling silver, whereas 'gold-plated' jewellery can be coated over any type of alloy metal. This means the gold could be covering elements such as nickel, brass, copper or aluminium.
When jewellery gets coated in gold, they undergo an electroplating process, where a thin layer of gold is coated over the base metal as to not distort the original shape of the design. However, this does mean that this thin, delicate layer will begin to wear slowly over time after being exposed to water, natural oils or just general wear, slowly turning into a beautiful vintage-looking gold.
However, the trouble with gold-plating is that once this gold layer begins to wear off, the alloy metals beneath it begin to resurface and starts to tarnish drastically, shortening its longevity and exposing the wearer to the inevitable erosion process, making the jewellery weaker, duller (and even making your skin turn green!).
While gold-coated sterling silver can still be considered vermeil, there is no guarantee that it is; therefore, calling it vermeil helps distinguish this, making sure your jewellery stays beautiful for longer!
Vermeil is an incredibly cost-effective alternative to Gold jewellery, offering you the same luxuries of wearing beautiful golden jewels and the additional flexibility of going back to silver when you change your style!
Bunny loves the look of rich, lush green gemstones in vermeil. Emeralds, Chrysocolla Malachite, Nephrite Jade and his favourite, Jadeite. The juxtaposition between the vibrant, golden lustre of Gold against the deep, luxurious viridescence brings a sense of effortless opulence, and is a timeless, unisex combination for years to come.

]]>According to ancient scholars, birthstones actually date all the way back to the first century.
The scriptures in the book of Exodus 28 in the Bible describe Moses setting forth a series of directions in regards to making a special ceremonial garment for the High Priest of the Hebrews, Aaron. This particular garment was to feature a breastplate, adorned with 12 precious gemstones to represent each of the 12 tribes of Israel. These featured stones were what we believe to be: Carnelian, Chrysolite, Emerald, Turquoise, Sapphire, Amethyst, Jacinth, Agate, Crystal, Beryl, Lapis Lazuli and Jasper.
It wasn’t until about 500 years later that the coincidence of there being exactly 12 stones was realised. This introduced some theories about whether these 12 stones could have been in reference to the 12 signs of the zodiac.
The possibility of there being a celestial connection to these stones instigated the belief that these stones may hold special metaphysical powers, with many wearers choosing to wear each stone during their respective months to heighten its protective powers.
Today, modern translations of the birthstone list have little to do with the High Priest’s breastplate or religion at all. But in an effort to introduce a standardised understanding of birthstones throughout the jewellery industry, the National Association of Jewellers (USA) developed the current birthstone list we know today which has each of the 12 stones corresponding with the 12 months in the Gregorian calendar.
As you may know, some months have more than one birthstone assigned to them. This is actually due to accessibility and affordability reasons in an effort to make birthstones available to everyone!
Click on the stones below to find out what metaphysical powers may be inhabiting them:
January (Capricorn/Aquarius): Garnet
February (Aquarius/Pisces): Amethyst
March (Pisces/Aries): Aquamarine
April (Aries/Taurus): Diamond (Herkimer Diamond, Clear Quartz)
May (Taurus/Gemini): Emerald (Carnelian)
June (Gemini/Cancer): Pearl (Alexandrite, Moonstone)
September (Virgo/Libra): Sapphire
October (Libra/Scorpio): Opal (Tourmaline)
November (Scorpio/Sagittarius): Topaz (Citrine)
December (Sagittarius/Capricorn): Turquoise (Tanzanite)
Birthstones are an effortless gift for those special in your life; They are thoughtful, personal, yet facile. At Made in Earth, we offer a large selection of delicate layering pieces, making it easy for anyone to incorporate this special sentimental piece to their own unique style.
Now that you have found your birthstone, we encourage you to take a closer look at our beautiful birthstone collection and begin building your very own collection at home!
]]>You may have come across the term 'Crystal Cleansing' (and not mean the physical, cleaning of debris from the stone but the spiritual, metaphysical cleansing of the stone). But what exactly does this actually mean?
We first have to understand the nature of crystals and how they 'behave'. And the most fundamental thing to know is that all crystals store energy. They become more in tune with your energy the longer you connect with it, absorbing the energies that it is trying to protect you from. And after time, they need to be replenished to be able to continue absorbing these energies (much like our need to sleep after a long day).
So that's where 'Crystal Cleansing' comes in...
Crystal cleansing isn't just about making the stone physically clean, but also about clearing out the energies associated with it.
While there is no charging method better than another, there are several different mediums you can use to start cleaning your crystals.
First, we have moon cleansing. Using the full moon is a traditional way of clearing energies. Placing your crystals in the direct moonlight or on your window sill, it is thought that a full moon can supercharge your crystal and release its withheld energies. This can be done anytime during the shadow phases of the full moon (three days before and after the full moon).
Another cleansing technique is with the Earth itself! Dig a small hole and place the removed soil into a jar with your crystals, placing the closed jar back into the hole and covering with more soil. Leave your crystals embedded for a week and voila! Your cleaning is complete!
A finally, there is water! There are two methods here: running water and moon water. It is thought that running water, with its movement, can cleanse the stone effortlessly. Moon cleansing is essentially the same as moon cleansing, but placing your stones in water.
This being said, we do not recommend your crystals or crystal jewellery to be submerged in water as some stones are more fragile than others. Some stones like Opal have very particular water compositions within its stone so adding water to it may affect its colour. Or drusy stones may trap water in its intricate crevices, exposing it to long-term water damage, as well as fossil structures, which may be distorted over time from water exposure.
Finally, our favourite way to cleanse crystals is using Palo Santo!
Better yet, with every purchase with us, you will receive a complimentary Palo Santo stick to cleanse your crystals yourself!
We'd love to know what your favourite cleansing techniques are! Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences below with our MIE family!

]]>The Earth’s crust is the most exciting part of our planet – it’s where gemstones are formed and found (with the exception of Diamonds, which form much deeper somewhere in the region between the lower crust and upper mantle). This is all thanks to volcanic eruptions, thrusting all the essential elements needed to form crystals from the depths of our planet. With over 4,000 minerals on earth today Obsidian is one of greater abundance and has range of uses throughout history.
Classified as an extrusive igneous rock, Obsidian is formed from the extremely rapid cooling of felsic lavas, which are high in silica and aluminum. As a general rule of thumb, the larger the crystal the longer it has had to crystallise. Steady temperatures mean the mineral rich solutions can continue to separate and solidify, through a process called fractional crystallisation, and produce large, well-formed crystals. Due to the quick cooling of Obsidian once it reaches the low temperatures of the earth’s surface, the mineral constituents from which it forms do not have time to crystallise.
With its body colour generally appearing as dark brown, greenish, or black due to iron/magnesium impurities, the many named varieties of obsidian refer to the inclusion or coloured iridescent sheens it may exhibit. Popular varieties include Snowflake Obsidian with greyish-white spherulites, Mahogany Obsidian, Gold Sheen Obsidian and Silver Sheen Obsidian. On the rare occasion where Obsidian displays a multi-coloured sheen, it is knows as ‘Rainbow Obsidian’, a much sought after and popular formation that contains fine, multi-coloured, parallel layers. The iridescence is due to fine inclusions of mineral crystals, rock debris or gases trapped under the surface and throughout the stone. In the case of Rainbow Obsidian each layer contains different densities of inclusions and gas bubbles diffracting the light into alternating spectral colours.
Worn as a talisman of protection to ward-off negative energies it is also the structural properties of Obsidian that made it a valuable commodity for Stone Age tool makers. Blades or arrowheads could be fashioned by breaking and fracturing the surface into curved shapes with a sharpness finer than that of any steel, down to nearly molecular thinness. Our designer has also captured these in some of our rings and pendants too!
Our Earth is constantly evolving and part of that evolution means outbursts from its core in the form of a volcano. These magnificent (and dangerous) products of the earth’s energy mean crystals and minerals are beginning their growth cycle with every fiery explosion. Thankfully for us in the jewellery industry Obsidian is readily available but for our other stones such as Amethyst and Aquamarine what is currently at our disposable may be all that is available in our lifetime.
